When we think getting hydrated, we typically think water or coconut water, or the like, but what we don't usually think about is how much of our hydration comes from the food we eat. 

Johnee Wilson, Raw Food Chef & Coach at RAW!, makes a notable point in her theory that "We don't get old, we dry out."  It's sometimes said that elderly people "dry up like prunes," and if you think about how a prune becomes a prune, it's transformation process is just that--drying out.  Light switch.  Oh no!  So what are we to do??! 

The first step is to look at your daily plate.  Is your food as hydrating as your water?  If you look at the composition of your daily food, look to how much brings water into your body vs. draws water from your body in order to digest. There needs to be a balance.

Foods that bring moisture into our bodies: green leaves, fruits, and vegetables contain varying levels of moisture. How much of these are you eating?

Foods that require moisture from our bodies:  Think about what foods draw moisture as you prepare them. If they react this way on the outside of your body, they will react this way on the inside of your body.  Have you seen how much water certain grains will draw in when you cook them?  Proper preparation of grains is so important. Next week's post will cover soaking/sprouting and proper grain preparation for good digestion.

And think about this: Oil and water don't mix. Oil floats on the surface of water. Think then what happens to oily foods that come through our bodies in overwhelming levels?  I pondered this... Experimenting with my protein choices over the past year, I'e discovered that my skin became less oily as I reduced my meat intake, namely the tasty fattier meat of chicken. I began to pay close attention to how I felt with less fat and oil in my diet, and I've realized I feel, well--less oily.  In considering the oil-water opposition, I now gravitate toward foods that make me feel more clear and fresh, more alive and hydrated, and less oily.

There needs to be a balance. If you notice that you're actually eating an overwhelming amount of food that is dehydrating, then shift a bit and eat more food that is hydrating--Envision the prune.
