What is a "sprouted grain?"  The Whole Grains Council describes this well.  Essentially, all grains are seeds and, in the right environment, they will begin to transform. By soaking seeds, we unlock their nutrition and disable their protective mechanisms--the part which is not good for us.


How do you know unsprouted grains are not good for us?  The Weston A Price Foundation, promoting the extensive research done by Dr. Weston Price, and traditional food preparation practices discusses this...


"Grains require careful preparation because they contain a number of antinutrients that can cause serious health problems. Phytic acid, for example, is an organic acid in which phosphorus is bound. It is mostly found in the bran or outer hull of seeds. Untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract and block their absorption. Preparation of grains is seemingly pretty important for proper digestion but, "Where will I find the time?!" you ask? 


I know... In a day and time where we are all so busy and pressed for time, this may seem daunting, but fortunately many commercial producers are now bringing us sprouted products.  You can purchase ready-made sprouted flours, cereals, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, etc. Take a look for them next time you're at the supermarket!


What about gluten-free?   Will you become nutrient deficient eating that special grain diet?
